I wanna preface this by saying that it’s true some people don’t take birthdays so seriously; I mean, I’ve done it, but this specific case is a little more heartbreaking because he knows it’s important to her, and it’s not that hard to give a present, or cook a very cheap homemade meal and write a handwritten letter if you don’t have any money, it’s seriously not that difficult. This might be the case of a boyfriend who doesn’t care anymore, and it’s waiting for her to pull the trigger.

In that case, I think she has to pull the trigger. A change in her attitude might be what this dynamic is missing; if that doesn’t accelerate the end of this relationship, it might generate a very important discussion, and when things have gotten to this level of toxicity, that is more than necessary; it’s desirable. It’s important to know that by keeping the peace, sometimes you’re just preserving exactly what consistently hurts you, and that is not something to preserve.
